Criticism accumulated on changed Facebook Privacy Policy
The Bloggers and Digital rights groups have accumulated criticism on Facebook privacy policy changed. Critics said that the privacy policy changes were unacceptable which push people towards sharing their updates with the broader web and the same has been findable through search engines. The changes have been made by the Facebook on December 9 by sending a pop-up to the users asking them to update the privacy policy. But Facebook replied that the changes assist their members to manage the updates which they want to share but not making them to reveal too much.
The statement from the Electronic Frontier Foundation said that the new privacy settings are mainly intended for the users to share their information publicly more than before. It also include that the new privacy settings can reduce the amount of control but it is very worse that also share the user’s personal data. The privacy change has been tested by the Facebook during middle of 2009 before introducing them to the web globally. The privacy setting let the people to decide who can view them across 350 million Facebook users and hide their information from the unwanted members.
Also the Facebook spokesmen, Barry Schmitt said that members could prevent revealing their information to non-friends by not filling the gender and location field. He also said that the changes in the privacy policy made easier for the audience to tune for an update or status change, which should have only less impact for the default settings of openness. However the criticised made by the privacy campaigners said that the Facebook members gender and location can be easily viewed by everyone. A Tech person also stated that the some of the changes in new privacy settings made the Facebook more attractive and delicious to search engines such as Google and Bing.
Marshall Kirkpatrick, blogger was worried that these new privacy settings made visible to everyone, which has specially introduced for the purpose of enhancing traffic to the site. Many bloggers and users leave their comments in the official Facebook blog about the impacts of the policy changes. Some people also said that they had updated their profile to hide their personal information and reduced the use of social site where they don’t want to spread widely either by design or accident.
